How to Kick Off a Conversation with a Candidate

With unemployment at record lows, it can be intimidating trying to navigate the candidate market. As recruiters, it is our job to attract top talent, even when it may be challenging to keep it. It’s vital to grab a candidate’s attention from the get-go. It today’s digital world, kicking off the candidate conversation is vital for recruiting success.

Here are some tips on how to have a standout conversation with your candidate:

  • Pick up the phone!
    • Imagine opening up your inbox each day to a bombarding amount of generic messages from recruiters from all across the country. That is what top talent is dealing with today! To have a standout conversation, get them on the phone. This will assist in creating a connection with the candidate and help to separate you from those flooding their inbox.
  • Target your candidate pool!
    • In today’s tight market, it may be tempting to cast a wide net. However, as mentioned above, candidates receive messages from other recruiters every day. In order to be different from those you are competing with, specifically target the candidates you believe to be the BEST fit. This will help avoid your messages becoming spam and instantly ignored.
  • Do your research!
    • Before sparking conversation with your targeted candidate, do some research, but avoid being creepy! Utilize social media, Google, and other public information to find out more about their current job, hobbies, interests, etc. Don’t dig too deep, just use what is on the surface. Identify what you have in common, and utilize those commonalities in your introduction. An example is if you both live in the same city, and they post about enjoying tacos, perhaps mention your favorite local taco truck!
